thumb_cutoutpenny2.jpgDancing and drumming, the perfect combination! Drumming may lie at the heart of Doris, but dancing embodies the rhythms and brings the sounds to life. At Doris you can dance as much as you like! Dance in the early morning light, dance on your way to the showers, dance while you’re waiting for your food in the cafes, dance round the fires and under the stars, oh and in the myriad workshops too! Dance styles, techniques and parties from around the globe.

“If you hear a different drummer – dreamer take a chance. The road you choose to travel means the difference in the dance.”  D. Morgan

There’s always a lot to choose from - feet on the grass African style, whirling to the beats or the soft melodies from improvisations on a Brazilian theme, reaching into the unknown and naming your animal spirit, salsa stepping, hip shaking, welly stomping, workshops and dance parties everyday. As always our dance classes are accompanied by live music from some of the best drummers around.

We've got the incomparable Nii Tagoe for the advanced dancers with stamina and experience and Rubba Stephenson, a dancing encyclopedia of Pan African dances, teaching the beginners. Saskia Bakayako and Vanessa Guevara will be teaching some classes at intermediate level for those with some previous experience and Idrissa Camara will be teaching Guinean ballet classes for intermediate level dancers. I f you've got any energy left, new workshops this year include the high energy and exciting sabar dance from Senegal with Diene Sagna!

The Moroccan group Jil Gnawa will be sharing their dance in a workshop as well as bringing us a Lila - a healing ceremony with trance dance. Amel Tafsout is teaching Maghrebi dances and leading a special night of Hadra, another form of healing trance dance from North Africa and this year we welcome for the first time the energetic Mariana Pinho who will be bringing us Samba Reggae and other dances from Brasil.

Then theres Dr Olu Taiwo, with his unique and profound Animal Spirit dance workshops, a new drum for dance workshop with Idrissa Camara where you can develop the realtionship between drummer and dancer, tribal bellydance with Michelle Pender and flowing contemporary African dance  with Denise Rowe, not to mention the wild and passionate Flamenco dance taught to us by Felipe de Algeciras...

Different styles and different levels from across the globe, with something for everyone. Classes you can drop in just to try them out and classes you can follow all week to stretch yourself and learn deeply with talented and award winning teachers.

You'll get a chance to be inspired by the teachers when some of them perform at the Thursday night African Party. Watch Ballet Nimba, Nii Tagoe, Kolo To Kolo, Mpe-Asm, Funkama and more ignite the night!

Warm up and warm down are an essential part of the classes so try to arrive on time to look after yourself and don’t forget to bring your costumes to enhance the dance experience. There are also stalls where you can buy African cloth, and jingles, jangles and floaty scarves for Arabic style.
